Bikram Yoga Quincy
What our students have to say
"My name is Margie and I am 55 years old. In 1994, I was diagnosed with the onset of Type II diabetes. Needless to say, it scared me tremendously. I changed my eating habits and started exercising daily. Over 11 years, I lost 75 pounds and kept my blood sugar under control.

In 2005, my sugar started to rise and my body started to ache. I was not getting the good feelings I used to get from exercising and running. I hadn’t changed anything in my diet or routine, but my blood sugar was rising.

At this point, a friend suggested I try yoga. I laughed and told her I thought yoga was stupid. Well, I am now eating my words! In 2005, I took my first Bikram yoga class. Now, I practice it 5 days a week; and I have never felt or looked so good. I have been able to cut my diabetes medication in half while still keeping my blood sugar under control.

Bikram yoga has changed my life both physically and mentally. I plan to practice Bikram yoga for the rest of my life- yogis and yoginis live long and healthy lives and I want to do the same."

Staff

One of the first things that you'll notice about the Quincy studio is how relaxed and down to earth it is. Our students and instructors are friendly folks who simply enjoy their practice.

A studio guided by a Certified Instructor provides the best possible instruction in the BikramYoga™ Method. In addition to completing a 9-week intensive training course that requires over 500 hours of study, Certified Instructors have a continuing connection to Bikram Choudhury and his training staff, allowing the Certified Studio to draw from all of the resources Bikram's training center has to offer.

Charles McKelway
CHARLES MCKELWAY, known to his students as Charlie, owns and operates the Bikram Yoga Quincy Studio.
Charlie’s journey to his role as a yoga instructor is unorthodox, to say the least. At the age of 19, he looked “yoga” up in the phone book. Luckily for us, “Bikram” was listed first! Charlie arrived at his first class knowing nothing about the practice, and was even unaware the room would be heated.
The heat turned out to be a blessing. Before he began practicing Bikram, Charlie was extremely self-conscious and refused to take his shirt off in public, even in front of his best friends. In his very first Bikram class, that insecurity was out the door- his shirt was off before the second posture. Charlie credits the heat, naturally, but also the knowledge that the only way his body would improve would be for him to observe it in the mirror. These days, Charlie makes his living teaching in nothing but a bathing suit. This shedding of inhibitions and insecurities has been one of Charlie’s greatest accomplishments in his practice.
To Charlie, Bikram yoga’s greatest value is derived from its tendency to harmonize with the positive behavior in your life, while clashing with negative behavior. As he says, “When I have finished one Bikram Yoga class, for one moment I know what peace is. When I go back into my real life I start to notice which parts are peaceful and work for me and which parts are not working.”
Charlie is 28 years old, and graduated from New York University. His interests include nutrition and self-development. He is committed to living a great life so that when his time comes, people will say, “There was nothing left in him.”

Linda Hewins
LINDA HEWINS is an instructor at Bikram Yoga Quincy. She has been teaching yoga for over a year, and practicing for 2 ½ years.
She learned about Bikram yoga through an Internet search, and has been practicing ever since. Prior to teaching at Bikram Yoga Quincy, Linda taught in Hong Kong at the busiest Bikram studio in the world, where more than 150 classes were taught per week.
Currently 42 years old, Linda believes Bikram’s greatest contribution in her life has been enabling her to take care of herself, which is the most important thing she can do both personally and for her family. Her greatest accomplishment in the practice thus far has been locking her knee for the entire 60 seconds of Standing Head to Knee pose.
To Linda, Bikram is a tool that can help you take control of your own health, wellness, and destiny. As she puts it, “What are you waiting for? Someone gonna help you?!”

Ami Tsuji
AMI TSUJI, 26, has been teaching Bikram yoga for about six months, but she has been practicing for almost four years. She was introduced to Bikram by a friend from college, and has been a devotee ever since. Ami began her Bikram yoga practice in Los Angeles. After finishing Bikram Yoga Teacher Training in June 2006, she moved to Boston, met up with Charlie, and began teaching at Bikram Yoga Quincy.
Bikram has had an impact on every element of Ami’s life. Physically, she has improved her flexibility to an enormous degree- before she began practicing, she was unable to touch her toes, or even get within 6 inches of her toes. Since starting Bikram, however, Ami has developed the ability to not only touch her toes, but to comfortably rest her whole hands on the floor as she bends forward! She has seen benefits internally as well- she is more patient, calm, mindful, accepting, focused and happy; and has a greater ability to cope in difficult situations.
To all those out there who are wondering if Bikram yoga is for you, Ami has this to say: “Come take care of your body and you'll be surprised to see what you can do with it. Unleash your potential!”
Ami is a certified Bikram Yoga Instructor. Additionally, she has a BA in Communications from the University of Southern California. She loves other forms of yoga, especially Power Yoga and Ashtanga Yoga. Outside of yoga, Ami enjoys traveling, going to the beach, cooking, and playing golf.

Sherie Dier
SHERIE DIER is an instructor at Bikram Yoga Quincy, as well as 5 other studios in the Boston area. Raised in Washington D.C., Sherie developed a knee problem at the age of 14, and a physical therapist referred her to yoga.
She began practicing, and moved to India for a year to improve her practice. She became addicted to the intense heat of the country, and saw firsthand the benefits the heat had on her abilities. When she moved back to the U.S., she felt something missing in her yoga experience.
In 2002, having already been a personal trainer for 2 years, Sherie took her first Bikram class. She was immediately drawn to the challenging nature of the series and the heated room, which reminded her of the yoga she had practiced in India.
She continued to practice for three years using the class to help undo any damage from five years of semi-competitive cycling, running, and micro-triathlons. But only at Bikram did she get the feeling of exhilaration from using everything she’s got, every day in a different way. In 2006, Sherie decided it was time to get serious about Bikram, and attended teacher training.
To Sherie, the greatest benefit of Bikram yoga is the series’ ability to force you to be honest with yourself- honest with your body and it’s limits, and the respect you develop for both. To anyone who is on the fence about trying Bikram, she has this to say- You deserve to know what’s possible!
